My name is Justin Hwang and I am a Korean immigrant and a local restaurant owner in the Portland-metro area, known as Joy Teriyaki. I have lived in East Multnomah County since 2003 and am running for State Senate in Senate District 25, which encompasses the cities of Gresham, Troutdale, Fairview, Wood Village, and parts of Portland.
My priorities for East Multnomah County are simple – I want to bring more education funding to our schools, lower our taxes, and address the homelessness crisis in our community.
As a small business owner, I have experience working with budgets and creating jobs – both of which will play a key role in restarting our economy post-COVID-19 crisis. As a board member of Mt. Hood Community College Foundation, I know what it takes to bring state funding to our schools. I will work tirelessly to fully fund our classrooms and bring technical and career programs back to Mt. Hood Community College. As a volunteer at Zarephath Ministries, a local soup kitchen and pantry, I know the issues facing our homeless popul\ation. I will fight to loosen Oregon’s restrictive land use system, work to decrease property tax rate for homebuyers, and will fight to provide fully funded mental health services for East County.
My family and I came to the United States with nothing to call our own except the clothes on our backs. Now, with the help from our community, I have grown my restaurant business to more than 25 restaurants. I will tackle policy in Salem with the same fervor and dedication as I did when I was growing my restaurant business. I will roll up my sleeves and work hard for you as your next State Senator in Salem. I would be honored to earn your vote in November.
